The Lady Warriors played an outstanding game offensively and defensively last night againt Plymouth South at home, and although we came up just a bit short when the horn sounded, the 54-49 loss marks an impressive show of growth for Nauset. Behind Jenny Leyton's "in the zone" offensive firepower of 23 points (6/8 from the line), 5 rebounds, and 3 assists, Nauset played right alongside Plymouth all game. Leyton made a three-point play and drained an NBA-range three-pointer in the last minute of the second quarter to cut Plymouth's lead to 6 at the half, 31-25. The Warriors came out in the second half determined to dig in and grab the lead, but some shots did not drop so easily and we were still down 37-32 going into the fourth quarter. The fastbreak play by the backcourt trio of Leyton, Callie Schadt, and Carolyn Brooks helped Nauset outrun Plymouth and their lead was cut to just a few points in the last minutes. Schadt chipped in 8 points and as a team Nauset poured in 17 pts in the fourth quarter with some late steals and made baskets, but a few turnovers and missed opportunities and the fact that Plymouth's Christina Jaros scored 3 buckets and 2 free throws allowed Plymouth South to barely hold on for the win. Kallie Hannon (2 pts, 8 rebounds), Carolyn Brooks (6 pts, 5 rebounds), and Kayla Smith (5 pts, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals) helped control the boards. The team should feel proud of its significant growth from the last time we played Plymouth South in December. We will travel to Marshfield next Tuesday.
