The Nauset Girls' Varsity Basketball team capped its 5-15 season with a big win over the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins on the road. In this year of growth, the team raised its average points per game and cut it opponents' margin of win noticeably. In addition, there were FIVE games the team lost by 5 or less points, which means that we were 20 points from a .500 season. Ten Warriors scored in the win, with our two seniors, Brittany Silva and Kayla Smith, playing extremely well in the last basketball game for Nauset. Silva (12 points) led Nauset scoring, as she lit up the gym with FOUR three-pointers, 6 break away steals, and several assists off those steals. Smith scored on a break away steal at the buzzer and she contributed 8 points (4 of 5 from the line). The entire Nauset team saw balanced playing time, which made for many contributors to the scoring column. Jenny Leyton (was a perfect 6-6 from the line) added 8 points as did Kristen Brown with two 3-pointers. Other scorers were Carli Thomas (4 pts), Callie Schadt (4 pts), Carolyn Brooks (4 pts), Natalia Bonfini ( 2 pts, also perfect from the line 2-2), Rachel Lagasse (1 pt), and Kallie Hannon (1 pt). Caitlin Schadt had another tremendous rebounding night, with 12 boards of the teams 45 rebounds.
Judging by the van full of singing hoopsters on the ride home, next season will feature a large senior group who will be ready to make good on the goals we set this season. The entire program has grown so much in one season, which will feed into the Varsity Team next year in a big way. Thank you to all the work that Coach Robinson put in with his undefeated freshmen team and to Coach Marsh and his highly successful JV team this season. Coach Faye Watson was a welcome addition to the coaching staff this season, and her energy, insight, and time will be sorely missed next season. One of our huddle cheers this season has been "Get It," and next year, there is no doubt that the experienced senior group, bolstered by some competitive youth, will do everything it can to "Get It."
