PEMBROKE – Nauset wrote the big story for the locals on Sunday in the MSTCA Division 3 Relays at Pembroke High School.
The Nauset boys 4x800 relay team ran a glittering, school-record 8:18 in the 4x800 to finish second, qualifying for the state meet by more than 31 seconds. Pembroke won the race and shattered a 20-year-old record.
Running the event for the Warriors were Jake Moore(2:01.8), Steven Gomez(2:09.2), Jake Meredith(2:03.3) and Andrew Herwig (2:02.7).
“We were expecting something good,” said Nauset coach Matt Clark. “State qualifying time is 8:49, and I told them I thought an 8:30 would be good.”
The Nauset foursome probably shouldn't be too much of a surprise. All four have qualified individually for the state meet. Meredith is unbeaten in dual meets in the 200 and 400, Moore in the 800 and mile.
This Relay performance ranks the Nauset Warriors at 5th in Massachusetts after the weekend which featured Relay Championship meets for all 4 divisions. The Nauset Boys 4x800 team was the highest place by any Cape school, in any division, in any event, for boys or girls.
