PRESS RELEASE

DIVISION 3 STATE RELAYS

APRIL 29, 2018

Nauset posted its best ever team showing in the Division 3 relays with impressive performances and intriguing indications of what the future may hold.

Nauset girls placed in four events, finished with 24 points and placed 8th among the 25 teams that scored points. Warrior boys scored 21 points and were 7th out of 29 that scored.

What is certain is that the Warriors came to compete. After boarding a bus at 6AM and sitting through the longest ride of any team - then exiting the bus to rainy weather, it was obvious that nothing was going to dampen their spirits.

Their first event on the track was the 4 X Mile relay where they placed 2nd in a time of 21:49.18. Although this team will lose standout seniors Madaket Nobili and Tara Ellard, freshmen Rachel Pranga and Izzy Nobili served notice that the future is strong by running 5:19 and 5:20 respectively.

Also placing second was the Sprint Medley relay. Izzy Nobili, Rebecca Pranga, Alena O’Connor and Kara Moore finished in 4:25.37, just 1.2 seconds off the school record.

The distance medley team of Rachel Pranga, Rebecca Pranga, Hannah Muse and Tara Ellard ran in the unseeded heat but still posted the third best time of the day in 13:19.44, just 5 seconds off the school record.

Nauset girls’  final points came from the 4X200M relay where Kara Moore, Alena O’Connor, Hannah Gale and Sophie Christopher ran 1:53.09 for 5th place.

Though Nauset failed to score points in the field events they did break a school record in the triple jump, O’Connor, Rebecca Pranga and Christopher jumped 87’0.25” breaking the old record set in 2016 by 4.5”.

Records were established in two events in which Nauset competed for the first time. In the long jump relay Lillian Manganaro, Polly Watson and Abigail Qvarnstrom posted 41’7.25”.  In the shuttle hurdles Manganaro, Christopher, Gale and Qvarnstrom ran 1:19.03.

Senior captain Brian Brooks and juniors Jacob Pearl and Nolan Ellard were part of two Nauset record setting relays. In the distance medley they joined with Jake Whitfield to run 10:52.48 and placed 2nd, smashing the old record by nearly 15 seconds. They also joined Owen Wilcox in the sprint medley third place team with a 3:39.75, dropping just over 7 seconds off the record. Brooks was instrumental in both performances running PR's 1:58.7 in the 800M of the sprint medley and 4:26.8 in the mile of the distance medley.

Besides excellence in distance the Warriors also demonstrated speed by placing 6th in the 4X100M relay and 3rd in the 4X200M relay. In the shorter event Tyreese Ferguson, Shavar Champagne, Richard Ramsey and Dyllon McNeill ran 45.82. In the two-lapper it was Ramsay, Wilcox, Champagne and McNeill.

Nauset’s other record breaking performance was in the long jump where Wilcox, Ramsay and Ellard jumped 54’9” - a 3” improvement over the record set in 2017.

Two new records were established. Aidan Handville, Lewin Runde and Bobby Freeman threw the javelin a combined 303’9” and the shuttle hurdle relay of Freeman, Matt Cahill, Josh Santos and Ferguson ran 1:17.40.

Nauset’s next competition is their final home meet of the year. Today’s competitors Owen Wilcox, Brian Brooks, Dyllon McNeill, Madaket Nobili, Tara Ellard, Alena O’Connor, Jake Whitfield, Polly Watson and Hannah Muse are among a group of seniors that will competing for the final time on Nauset’s track. But after today’s performances they can rest assured they are leaving the team in the hands of very capable underclassmen.
